Fun facts about Barcode Generator
- The first commercial barcode scan happened on June 26, 1974, at a Marsh supermarket in Troy, Ohio — the product was a 10-pack of Wrigley's Juicy Fruit gum.
- UPC-A barcodes (the ones on most US products) encode exactly 12 digits — the last digit is a check digit calculated from the first 11.
- Scanners read the contrast between bars and spaces, so colour matters: red bars often fail because most laser scanners use red light, which makes red look like white.
- EAN-13 is UPC-A with one extra leading digit; the first digits identify the GS1 organisation that issued the prefix, such as 890 for GS1 India.
- GS1, the organisation behind retail barcodes, says its barcodes are scanned more than 10 billion times a day.
